I had the extraordinary good fortune of working with Lew as a colleague and as a co-author. Lew taught me invaluable lessons about economics and about research. It was an honour and a pleasure to write his citation when he became a Distinguished Fellow of the NZ Association of Economists - an honour that he richly deserved. I will miss Lew as a person, as a colleague and as an exemplar of how an economist should apply their skills to address real-world economic matters.

Many thanks for this excellent tribute to Professor Evans. I was one of Lew’s students at Vic back in 1987-88 and he had a great impact on my understanding of economics and how to be a decent economist. His lecture style was especially clear even on quite difficult micro or econometric issues. His lucidity was hard to emulate but I have found it worthwhile to make the attempt. He would leaven theory, like contestable markets, with real world issues that did not merely negate the theory but gave a sense around the limitations on its utility, an approach of broader value. I recall he took some time to ask probing questions to explore if we really grasped what econometric formula meant, and being made aware of these gaps was invaluable if disheartening, and it was all done with a light touch.
