Learn to use New Zealand's integrated data

Courses on offer from The New Zealand Social Statistics Network

Have you heard about Stats NZ’s Integrated Data Infrastructure (IDI) and thought that it might be useful for your work but are not sure where to start? The New Zealand Social Statistics Network are offering two courses later this year which will help. A limited number of free places are available in these courses for Stats NZ, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Social Development, and Social Wellbeing Agency staff.

Introduction to SQL

27 - 30 November. Online

For those who are ready to dive into using the IDI, this course provides an intro into SQL, which is a necessary tool for accessing and using the data.

1 December. Wellington

This one-day in-person course will give you information about what’s available in the IDI datasets, and provide details about the requirements and processes for getting started and analysing them. The instructors, Associate Professor Barry Milne (COMPASS Research Centre) and Dr Andrea Teng (University of Otago Wellington) will give you many examples of studies using the IDI and there will be an expert users’ panel at day’s end.

What is the Integrated Data Infrastructure?

The IDI is a large research database, holding de-identified microdata about people and households in New Zealand. The data is about life events, like education, income, benefits, migration, justice, and health. It comes from government agencies, Stats NZ surveys, and non-government organisations (NGOs). The data is linked together, or integrated, to form the IDI.

Researchers use the IDI to conduct cross-sector research that provides insight into our society and economy. The research can help answer questions about complex issues that affect New Zealanders.
