Invitation to participate in research on economic paradigm change & innovation policy🍋
Your survey response will be appreciated
I am Rowan Conway, a Policy Fellow and PhD Candidate at the UCL Institute of Innovation and Public Purpose in the UK. I am studying the unique nature of the New Zealand innovation economy as a small nation, rich in innovation assets, cultural diversity, and heritage. I would like to extend an invitation to NZAE members and Asymmetric Information subscribers to participate in a survey for my PhD research.
In the NZAE survey Doughnut, Mission & Circular Economies, conducted by Dennis Wesselbaum in May 2023, I was intrigued by the divergence in views between academic and policy economists regarding new economic thinking
As Dennis observed, the evolution of economic thinking is a complex and sometimes contentious process, with new concepts emerging that challenge the discipline all the time, but with very few getting integrated into the core of economic thought. He wrote
“The economics discipline evolves — too slowly for some, too fast for others. New concepts, frameworks, ideas and challenges continually appear at its fringes, each with advocates and detractors — many of them passionate. Some of these concepts prove themselves to be both valid and useful, and these get absorbed over time into the core discipline. Many, perhaps most, fade away, of interest only to the discipline’s historians. While a concept remains part of the fringe, it is difficult, perhaps impossible, to predict its eventual fate.”
Given the sharp divergence in views between academic and policy economists, I felt compelled to design a follow-up research survey for my PhD, which is exploring new economic paradigms, particularly in the context of mission-oriented innovation policy in New Zealand. My research looks at how different mindsets and decision-making heuristics affect the adoption of new policies and frameworks.
I am conducting a survey that hones in on missions as an example of a new economic paradigm. I seek input from those with an interest in economic and innovation policy in New Zealand. As economists, your participation will provide critical data for advancing the understanding of the cognitive mechanisms behind mission-oriented innovation policy.
Please take the survey, it takes under 10 minutes to complete and is entirely anonymous. The data collected will be used solely for research purposes, and all responses will be treated with the utmost confidentiality. The perspectives and insights from the NZAE membership would be invaluable. In return for this, I will write up a synthesis of the research for the NZAE newsletter once it is published.
Thank you for considering this invitation. Your contribution will advance research at the intersection of economics, innovation policy, and cognitive science. I greatly appreciate your time and would be happy to answer any questions you may have. Please feel free to contact me at rowan.conway@ucl.ac.uk.
